Tasmania city guide
Launceston travel guide
How to use Launceston as a northern Tasmania base for Cataract Gorge, Tamar Valley, wineries, and Cradle Mountain access.

Launceston is smaller and quieter than Hobart, but it is very useful for a Tasmania road trip. It gives easy access to Cataract Gorge, the Tamar Valley, northern food producers, and the route towards Cradle Mountain.
Best things to do in Launceston
- Cataract Gorge
- Tamar Valley wineries
- City Park
- Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery
- Harvest Market
- Bridestowe Lavender Estate
- Cradle Mountain side trip
How many days?
Two nights is enough for the city and Tamar Valley. Add one more night if you want a slower food trip or a less rushed drive towards Cradle Mountain.
Where Launceston fits
Launceston works well between Hobart and Cradle Mountain, or as the start of a northern loop if you fly into Launceston Airport.
