Best campervan routes
Best campervan routes Australia
Route ideas that fit real holiday lengths, with suggested days, seasons, and what each drive is best for.
Great Ocean Road
Allow 2 to 4 days from Melbourne. The road is sealed, scenic, and easy for first-time campervan travellers. Sleep near Lorne, Apollo Bay, or Port Campbell and continue inland through the Otways or back along the coast. Summer is busy, while March, April, October, and November are often easier.
Sydney to Brisbane or Cairns
Sydney to Brisbane needs at least 10 days if you want beaches, national parks, Byron Bay, and the Gold Coast without rushing. Brisbane to Cairns is better with 2 to 3 weeks because the distances are bigger than they look. Add Noosa, Bundaberg, Airlie Beach, Townsville, Mission Beach, and Cairns if time allows.
Tasmania loop
Tasmania is one of Australia’s best campervan destinations because the island is compact and varied. Allow 10 to 16 days for Hobart, Freycinet, Bay of Fires, Launceston, Cradle Mountain, Strahan, and the Huon Valley. Book summer ferries and national park campgrounds early.
Perth to Exmouth
This is the classic Western Australia coast route. Allow 12 to 18 days for Cervantes, Geraldton, Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Coral Bay, Exmouth, and Ningaloo Reef. The drive is long but rewarding, with big distances, remote beaches, and serious fuel planning.
