How to plan a New South Wales trip around Sydney, beaches, mountains, wine country, and the south or north coast.

New South Wales is one of the easiest states for a first Australia trip because Sydney gives you a strong base and several rewarding add-ons. The trick is choosing one direction rather than trying to do the whole state quickly.

Best NSW route ideas

  1. Sydney plus Blue Mountains in 4 to 5 days
  2. Sydney, Hunter Valley, and Port Stephens in 5 to 7 days
  3. Sydney and Jervis Bay south coast in 5 to 6 days
  4. Sydney to Byron Bay north coast in 7 to 10 days

How many days?

Four days is enough for Sydney and the Blue Mountains. A week lets you add wine country or the South Coast. Ten days gives enough room for a slower coast route.

Transport tips

Use public transport in Sydney, trains or tours for the Blue Mountains, and a rental car for Jervis Bay, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, or the South Coast.
