Great Barrier Reef travel guide

Where to base yourself, when to go, what reef tours cost, and how to choose between Cairns, Port Douglas, and the Whitsundays.

Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is not one single stop. It stretches along the Queensland coast, so the best trip starts with choosing the right base. Cairns is the easiest all-round choice, Port Douglas feels calmer and more polished, and the Whitsundays are best if you want islands, sailing, and a softer holiday pace.

Cairns vs Port Douglas vs Whitsundays

Best season for the Great Barrier Reef

May to October is the safest planning window for most visitors. The weather is drier, humidity is lower, and reef visibility is often better. November to April can still work, but it is wetter and hotter in Far North Queensland. Tropical beaches also require more attention to marine stinger advice during the warmer months.

Reef tours and what to book

  • Outer reef day tours: best for first-time visitors who want snorkelling, optional diving, and a full reef day.
  • Reef pontoon tours: good for families, nervous swimmers, and people who want underwater observatories or semi-submersible boats.
  • Small boat snorkel or dive trips: better for confident swimmers and travellers who care more about reef time than facilities.
  • Scenic flights: expensive, but useful if you want to see reef shapes and islands from above.
  • Whitsundays sailing: choose this if Whitehaven Beach and island time matter as much as the reef itself.

Great Barrier Reef costs

Budget roughly AUD 180 to 300 per adult for a standard full-day reef tour from Cairns or Port Douglas. Premium small-group trips, introductory dives, helicopter add-ons, and scenic flights raise the cost quickly. Whitsundays sailing day trips usually sit in a similar range, while overnight sailing trips cost more but give the journey a much slower feel.

How many days do you need?

Three nights is the practical minimum for Cairns or Port Douglas: one arrival day, one reef day, and one Daintree or rainforest day. Four to five nights gives you a weather buffer. For the Whitsundays, allow at least three nights if you want a reef trip plus Whitehaven Beach without rushing.

Good reef trip combinations

  • First Australia trip: Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, and the reef.
  • Queensland nature trip: Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas, and Daintree Rainforest.
  • Island trip: Brisbane or Gold Coast, then Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island for the Whitsundays.
