Campervan guide - Victoria

Victoria by campervan

Great Ocean Road, alpine villages, wineries, and some of Australia's best road trip scenery.

Victoria campervan travel guide hero photo

Victoria is the most compact of the mainland states, which makes it ideal for campervan travel. You can cover an extraordinary range of terrain in a week - ocean cliffs, volcanic plains, alpine forests, and wine valleys - without ever driving more than three or four hours in a single stretch.

Routes & suggested stages

Great Ocean Road: Melbourne → Warrnambool

5-7 days. One of Australia's most iconic drives. Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Port Campbell are the headline stops. The Twelve Apostles area has a dedicated caravan and camping area at nearby Princetown.

High Country loop: Bright → Mount Hotham

3-4 days. Best in autumn (April-May) when the deciduous trees turn. The Ovens Highway through Beechworth and Bright is well serviced. Alpine campgrounds suit self-contained vans.

Yarra Valley & Mornington Peninsula

2-3 days. A compact loop from Melbourne into the wine regions. The peninsula has good caravan parks at Rye and Rosebud. Phillip Island adds an extra night.

Grampians & Halls Gap

3-4 days. Excellent self-contained camping throughout the Grampians National Park. Halls Gap township has powered sites and great hiking access.

Camping & free camps

Parks Victoria manages campgrounds across Grampians, Wilsons Prom, Alpine National Park, and the Great Ocean Road National Park. Book ahead for summer and public holidays. Wilsons Promontory is the most popular - book months in advance.

Best season to go

March to May (autumn) is the best all-round season. The Great Ocean Road is busiest from Christmas to Easter. The High Country is accessible October to April; snowfall can close mountain roads in winter.

Roads & vehicle type

The Great Ocean Road has tight corners and is not suited to large motorhomes towing a vehicle. Alpine roads require care in spring when gravel sections can be muddy. Most other routes are fully sealed.

LPG, dump points & services

LPG widely available. Melbourne has multiple campervan service centres. Dump points at Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and all major coastal towns.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a big motorhome along the Great Ocean Road?
If your van is over 7 metres or you're towing a car behind, the cliff-side bends between Apollo Bay and Lavers Hill are going to make you miserable. A standard van is fine. Anything larger, take the inland Princes Highway and join the GOR at Warrnambool from the western end.
Where can I free-camp in Victoria?
The coast is mostly off-limits - beachside councils take a hard line on overnight stays. Inland is much more relaxed: the Otways, the Mallee, and along the Murray have plenty of cheap forestry and rest-area sites. Parks Victoria runs bookable spots in every major national park.
When does snow close the alpine roads?
June through to early October you can expect snow restrictions on Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, and Falls Creek, and chains can be required even on perfectly sunny days. The lower alpine valleys around Bright and Mansfield stay open year-round - just cold.
How long for the Great Ocean Road in a campervan?
Five to seven days does it justice. Two days is a tasting menu. Stay at the dedicated caravan area at Princetown one night - you can walk to the Twelve Apostles before the tour buses arrive at sunrise.
Are there campervan service options in Melbourne?
Plenty. Melbourne is the second-best city in Australia for campervan service after Perth. Britz, Maui, Apollo, and Jucy all have depots, plus independents who handle gas and electrical when something goes wrong mid-trip.
