Campervan guide - Queensland

Queensland by campervan

Coastal highway to Cairns, the reef, rainforest access, and warm-weather driving year-round.

Queensland campervan travel guide hero photo

Queensland's east coast offers one of the most popular and well-serviced campervan routes in Australia. The Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns is a continuous highway of beach towns, reef access points, and tropical scenery. Further inland, the Atherton Tablelands and the savanna country of outback Queensland are wilder and far less visited.

Routes & suggested stages

Bruce Highway: Brisbane → Cairns

14-21 days at a relaxed pace. The highway is well signed and the caravan parks are plentiful. Key stops: Noosa, the Whitsundays (Airlie Beach), Townsville, and Mission Beach before Cairns.

Whitsundays coastal loop

3-4 days around Airlie Beach, Bowen, and Proserpine. The Whitsundays mainland has good powered sites; the islands themselves require a boat.

Cairns & the Tablelands

5-7 days. Use Cairns as a base and loop through Kuranda, the Atherton Tablelands, and Lake Eacham. Cool highland roads and excellent camping in national park crater lakes.

Gold Coast to Noosa

4-5 days of beach hopping. Currumbin, Coolangatta, Sunshine Coast, and Noosa all have well-run caravan parks. Popular with families.

Camping & free camps

Woongoolba Rest Area, Lake Eacham National Park, Cape Hillsborough, and Carnarvon Gorge are standout free and low-cost spots. Beware crocodile warnings near waterways in northern Queensland.

Best season to go

May to September (dry season) is overwhelmingly the best time for northern Queensland. The wet season (November-April) brings heavy rain, road closures, and humidity above Townsville.

Roads & vehicle type

The Bruce Highway is sealed but has some rough sections between Townsville and Cairns. Cape Tribulation road requires a 4WD for the creek crossings beyond the Daintree River ferry.

LPG, dump points & services

LPG available throughout the Bruce Highway corridor. Camp kitchens common in commercial parks. Dump points at major highway towns. Fuel costs increase significantly in remote inland areas.

Frequently asked questions

Are there crocodile risks for campervan travellers in Queensland?
Yes - saltwater crocs live in every waterway from Rockhampton north. Take the warning signs seriously. Don't camp on the river bank, don't swim where there isn't a safe-swim sign, and don't assume a freshwater lagoon is safe just because no one's around. The croc doesn't care that you're "just having a quick dip".
When is the best time to drive the Bruce Highway?
May to September for anything north of Townsville - that's the dry. The wet season (November to April) is humid, the rain comes down in sheets, and roads get cut by floods. Brisbane to Bundaberg is comfortable year-round.
Do I need a 4WD for Cape Tribulation?
No - the road is fully sealed all the way from the Daintree River ferry to Cape Trib. The 4WD requirement starts north of Cape Trib on the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown, where the creek crossings will swallow a 2WD whole.
How long for a Brisbane to Cairns campervan trip?
Two to three weeks at the right pace. Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg, the Whitsundays, Townsville, Mission Beach - they're all worth a night each. Push it into a week and you'll feel like you spent the whole trip on the highway.
Where can I free-camp in Queensland?
Plenty of options - better than NSW or VIC. Inland councils run small-fee showground stays, the Bruce Highway has 24-hour rest areas, and QPWS national park sites round it out. Coastal options are tighter, but Mission Beach and the Whitsundays have decent budget caravan parks if free isn't on offer.
