Campervan guide - Australian Capital Territory

Australian Capital Territory by campervan

A compact capital base with easy links to Kosciuszko and the Snowy Mountains.

Canberra and the ACT work best as a campervan stop rather than a destination in themselves. The city has good caravan parks, the national museums are free, and the surrounding region connects quickly to the Snowy Mountains, the Southern Highlands of NSW, and the wine regions of the Canberra district.

Routes & suggested stages

Canberra & surrounds loop

2-3 days. Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve for wildlife, the Canberra district wineries (Murrumbateman, Hall), and the Australian Botanic Garden make a relaxed loop without leaving the ACT and immediate NSW border.

Canberra → Kosciuszko → Snowy Mountains

4-5 days heading south. Thredbo and Perisher have caravan parks open in summer. The drive along the Alpine Way through Jindabyne is one of the better scenic drives in southern NSW.

Canberra → Southern Highlands

2-3 days. Mittagong, Berrima, and Bowral are picturesque historic towns with powered sites. Easy access back to Sydney if needed.

Camping & free camps

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve has day access only. Commercial caravan parks in Canberra are the main option. Country caravan parks in Yass, Goulburn, and Cooma make good overnight bases for the surrounds.

Best season to go

September to May for comfortable temperatures. Snowfall can affect Tidbinbilla in winter. Spring (September-November) is the most pleasant for walking and cycling around Lake Burley Griffin.

Roads & vehicle type

All ACT roads are sealed. The Alpine Way into the Snowies is sealed but narrow in places. The Kings Highway east to the coast is excellent.

LPG, dump points & services

Canberra has full campervan services. LPG available throughout. Good access to both Sydney and Melbourne for major repairs if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you free-camp in a campervan in the ACT?
Practically no. The ACT government bans overnight stays on streets and in most public car parks. Use the commercial parks - Canberra Motor Village in O'Connor or Canberra South Tourist Park in Symonston are the easy options. Free camping resumes the moment you cross into NSW; Captains Flat or south near Bredbo are popular fall-backs.
How long do I need for an ACT campervan stop?
Two or three days for Canberra itself - the museums, the War Memorial, Parliament House, a Lake Burley Griffin loop. Add another three to four if you want to combine it with the Snowy Mountains or the Southern Highlands.
Are Canberra attractions campervan-friendly?
Surprisingly so. Most major museums (National Museum, War Memorial, Parliament House) have van and coach parking. Lookout points like Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain Tower have generous lots. Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is day-only - no overnight stays, but easy to fit into an afternoon.
When is the best time to visit Canberra by campervan?
September to November (Floriade is the headline) and March to May. Summer's hot but bearable. Avoid June to August unless your van is well-insulated - Canberra overnights regularly drop below freezing, and a non-insulated van turns into a cold box you can't escape from.
Where do I park overnight in central Canberra?
Use a commercial caravan park, simple as that. Canberra Motor Village in O'Connor (5 minutes from the city centre), Exhibition Park EPIC during off-event periods, or Canberra South Tourist Park in Symonston. All have powered sites, dump points, and bus links into town.
