The Whitsunday Islands are often talked about as one place, but the experience changes depending on where you stay. Hamilton Island is the easiest resort base, Whitsunday Island has Whitehaven Beach, and many smaller islands are best visited by boat.

Main islands to know

  2. Whitsunday Island for Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet

  4. Daydream Island for resort-style short breaks

Best way to visit

If you want comfort, stay on Hamilton Island. If you want value and tour choice, stay in Airlie Beach and visit the islands by boat. If you want the classic Whitsundays feel, book a sailing trip.

Best season

May to October is generally less humid; check marine weather and current resort operations for your dates.

Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach?

Hamilton Island is an island base with resort facilities and direct arrival options. Airlie Beach is on the mainland and offers a broader range of accommodation and independent boat tours. Compare room, transfer, meal and boat costs together before choosing.

Whitsunday Island and Whitehaven

Whitsunday Island is primarily a national park visit, not a resort base. Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookouts are reached by boat or aircraft. Confirm whether a tour lands at Whitehaven, visits the lookout, or does both.

Smaller islands and access

Hayman and Daydream are resort-led stays with different budgets and transfer arrangements; Hook and other islands are more often part of sailing routes or park visits. Check accommodation, public access, ferry or boat transfer, and facilities for the specific island before booking.
