What the route includes
The coastal approach links Perth, the Pinnacles area, Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Carnarvon, Ningaloo and the Pilbara before Broome. Detours add substantial distance: Denham, Coral Bay and Exmouth are not simply stops on one straight highway.
Use the overnight plan below as a starting point. Verify driving distances and times for the exact accommodation and current roads before booking. A map’s driving estimate excludes fuel, meals, walks and stops.

Day 14: time in Broome before departure, subject to your flight or other onward plans
This version has thirteen overnight stays. Add more Broome nights if you want a holiday there, and do not arrange a flight that depends on arriving by road at the last moment.
With about three weeks: choose an inland variant
For Karijini, redesign the section after Ningaloo as an inland route rather than adding the park as a quick detour. Allow several nights near the park, check the access roads for the walks you want and then plan the onward connection towards Port Hedland and Broome.
Use the remaining time for another reef day, longer in Broome and a buffer for weather or fatigue. Three weeks still requires choices; it does not make every side road or gorge a sensible addition.
If you have less time
Reduce the route or fly one way within a shorter regional trip. Perth to Exmouth is already a substantial holiday. Do not preserve every destination by replacing two-night stays with a chain of long drives and brief photo stops.
When to go
May to September is often a practical starting window for this northbound journey. Conditions vary along the route, and holidays can make accommodation scarce. Northern summer brings different heat, rain and cyclone considerations.
Check current forecasts, emergency information, park notices and the Main Roads WA Travel Map before remote legs. A seasonal recommendation does not establish that a road is open.
Choose the vehicle after the route
Confirm one-way rental availability and the drop-off location before booking flights. Compare kilometres included, insurance excess, roadside assistance, tyres, extra drivers and prohibited roads. A 4WD booking does not automatically allow beaches, river crossings or every unsealed road.
For a coastal highway journey, identify the side trips that change the vehicle requirements. For Karijini, confirm each access road and the rental conditions separately.
Fuel, water and communications
Plan named fuel stops and check their opening hours. Do not rely on reaching one remote outlet just before closing. Carry water, food and essential medication for delays, plus offline directions and booking details.
Tell someone your route and expected arrival. Choose emergency communications appropriate to the remoteness. Avoid dusk and night driving where wildlife and livestock make the road harder to read.
What to reserve
Prioritise accommodation in small coastal towns, reef activities, park camping and any limited-supply stays. Check check-in hours and meal options at overnight stops. Keep a legal backup overnight option where possible.
A campervan still needs an approved place to stay. Read the current signs and land-manager rules rather than assuming a roadside parking area is a campground.
Before each driving day
- Confirm the next fuel stop and a backup
- Read road, weather and park alerts
- Check the real arrival time after breaks
- Keep food, water and medication within reach
- Save accommodation access details offline
- Shorten or stop the day if fatigue or conditions make the plan unsuitable
