Perth travel guide

Give Perth enough time for the places around the city as well as the centre. Kings Park, Fremantle, the beaches and Rottnest Island each reward an unhurried visit. Three or four nights covers a first introduction; add nights if you want a regional extension.

Perth skyline reflected in the Swan River

The main experiences

  • Kings Park and Botanic Garden for views, gardens and walking
  • Fremantle for heritage streets, the waterfront, markets and museums
  • Rottnest Island for beaches, cycling or a booked island tour
  • Cottesloe for the coast and an evening by the ocean
  • Swan Valley for a food and wine outing

Treat Margaret River as a separate regional stay if possible. Putting it into a short Perth visit adds a substantial road journey.

Choose a base that matches your plans

The CBD is convenient for public transport and mixed sightseeing. Northbridge suits visitors interested in restaurants and evenings out, but check the exact street if quiet nights matter. Fremantle is a useful alternative if its port setting, heritage and island departures are central to the trip. Cottesloe suits a beach-led stay.

Before booking, compare parking, the walk to public transport, lift access, room layout and cancellation terms. Check whether a coastal property is actually near the beach rather than relying on the suburb name.

Compare areas to stay

Choose the area that saves you the most daily travel. Check the exact address, late-night route and final parking cost before booking.

Public transport and the airport

Transperth’s Go Anywhere fare replaced the old zone structure from 1 January 2026. The standard cash or contactless fare is A$3.50, with SmartRider discounts available. The Go Anywhere ticket allows travel across the network within its three-hour validity.

Visa, Mastercard and supported digital wallets can be used for contactless travel. Tag on and off with the same card or device; a phone wallet and its physical card are treated separately. Concession travellers should check SmartRider requirements.

Use the journey planner for the airport and confirm the connection from your particular terminal to the station or bus stop. Perth’s CAT buses are useful for city trips.

Plan Rottnest as a full day

Compare the actual departure point, sailing times, island admission and inclusions before buying a ferry ticket. Fremantle and central Perth departures create different travel days. Add time to get to the terminal and check the final return sailing.

Reserve bikes, a bus tour or other transport if needed. Consider wind, sun exposure, cycling ability and walking distances when choosing the day’s route. Observe wildlife without feeding or handling it.

Beaches and wildlife tours

Choose a patrolled beach and follow the flags and local conditions for swimming. A sunset visit does not require entering the water.

Rockingham’s dolphin-swimming product is seasonal: the operator advertises departures from September to early June, subject to weather and bookings. Wildlife cruises are a different product. For whale watching, check the season for the particular departure port and operator rather than applying one date range to all of Western Australia.

Where to eat

Northbridge has a broad choice of restaurants. Mount Lawley and Highgate suit a neighbourhood meal, while Fremantle makes it easy to combine food with a day around the port. Check opening days and book ahead for a restaurant that is central to your plans.

For a winery day, choose a guided tour or a designated driver. Keep Swan Valley separate from Margaret River when comparing distances and day-trip options.

Day 1: the city and Kings Park

Start with a manageable city walk and time in Kings Park. Keep the first afternoon flexible if you have arrived on a long flight. Finish around the river or in a restaurant district convenient for your accommodation.

Day 2: Fremantle

Travel to Fremantle and group the port, heritage streets, a museum or prison tour and a meal into one day. Check market opening days before making the market the main reason for the trip. Reserve a timed tour if you want a particular departure.

Day 3: Rottnest Island

Give the island the whole day. Book transport appropriate to your abilities and choose a few beaches or stops rather than attempting the entire island. Keep the return ferry time visible in your plan.

Day 4: choose one extension

Choose Cottesloe and a slower city day, a Swan Valley outing or a booked Pinnacles excursion. The Pinnacles are a substantial trip north of Perth, so inspect the complete schedule and return time. Add separate nights for Margaret River rather than squeezing it into this day.

When to visit and what to book around

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for a city-and-coast trip. Summer can be very hot; winter needs more flexibility for rain and marine conditions. Plan exposed walks early on hot days and use the current forecast.

Perth Festival 2026 ran from 6 February to 1 March. Check the organiser for the next edition before booking a festival visit.

Practical checks

Check official attraction and ferry prices for your dates rather than relying on an old package total. For accessibility, confirm boarding assistance, steps, surfaces and the suitability of a specific tour. Use the central visa guide for entry information and keep your bookings available offline.
