Train travel in Australia

First decide whether the train is the holiday or simply the way to reach your next stop. A cabin journey across the continent and a reserved regional seat are very different purchases.

Choose the journey that fits your trip

The Indian Pacific links Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. The Ghan serves the Adelaide-Alice Springs-Katherine-Darwin corridor. Great Southern offers seasonal journeys between southern and eastern Australia. The Overland is a daytime connection between Melbourne and Adelaide. Regional services are worth comparing when you want to reach a particular town without driving.

Indian Pacific: allow for the direction

The published 2026 timetable has a four-day Sydney-to-Perth journey, departing Wednesday, and a five-day Perth-to-Sydney journey, departing Saturday. Each direction is scheduled weekly. Do not use the same duration for both when booking hotels or onward flights.

Stops and experiences also differ. The eastbound timetable lists a morning Kalgoorlie experience. Read the itinerary for your direction and departure date, rather than assuming every train offers the same visits.

The Ghan: check the exact product

Choose the departure, direction and journey length before comparing prices. The Ghan and The Ghan Expedition are not interchangeable itineraries. Check which stops, excursions and transfers are included, and whether your preferred activity suits your mobility and fitness.

If you want time around Uluru or Kings Canyon, plan that as a separate road or tour arrangement. A stop in Alice Springs does not turn either destination into a short station excursion.

Great Southern: a seasonal journey

The published 2026/27 timetable includes December, January and February. Adelaide to Brisbane takes three days; Brisbane to Adelaide takes four. Some departures also offer a Brisbane-to-Melbourne option. Check the exact season and arrival terminal before arranging accommodation.

The Overland: a daytime journey

Under the timetable applying from 21 February to 31 December 2026, departures from Adelaide are on Sunday and Thursday; departures from Melbourne are on Monday and Friday. This is a seated daytime service, not a sleeper train. Choose the departure direction before checking connecting travel.

The Prospector: Perth to Kalgoorlie

Transwa’s Prospector connects East Perth Terminal with Kalgoorlie. Reserve a seat and check the current timetable and disruptions. It is a practical alternative to driving if you are spending time in the Goldfields.

Transwa fares were reduced by 50% from 1 January 2026. Older fare examples can therefore be misleading. Use the official fare calculator or a quote for your dates and passenger category.

Other regional journeys

Compare NSW TrainLink for regional NSW and interstate services, V/Line for Victoria and Queensland Rail Travel for Queensland. Networks, booking rules and ticket systems differ. Some journeys combine train and coach travel; inspect every leg before paying.

Do not assume a reservation is unnecessary because a service is regional. Confirm the station, baggage allowance, seating and any replacement-coach arrangements.

How to compare the real price

For rail holidays, compare cabin type, occupancy, meals, drinks, excursions and cancellation terms. For regional travel, include station transfers, food, luggage conditions and any accommodation needed because of arrival times. Avoid relying on an undated “from” price.

A lower fare for a shared cabin is not necessarily the price for someone travelling alone. Concessions depend on the operator’s eligibility rules; overseas visitors should not assume that age alone qualifies them.

Booking, passes and onward travel

Book through the relevant operator or a clearly identified travel agent. Check whether a pass covers the particular trains and coaches you intend to use and whether seat reservations are still required. Pass coverage varies by operator, so check every planned leg.

Leave room for disruption before a flight or cruise. Ask the operator about assistance, steps, cabin dimensions and accessible facilities before choosing a service. Download your ticket and joining instructions.

Can I take a car or campervan?

Do not assume that a passenger train carries private vehicles. If vehicle transport is essential, obtain written confirmation for the exact service, vehicle dimensions, loading location and date before building the trip around it. Historical Motorail brochures are not evidence of current availability.
